NSS Objective:

  1. Understand the community in which they work
  2. Understand themselves in relation to their community
  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving process
  4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  6. Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  10. Practice national integration and social harmony

Motto:

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to day programme.

Highlights of a few activities

7 day special camp on slum area improvement from 18th to 24th December, 2009:

Rabindra Bharati University has organized a 7 day special camp on slum area improvement from 18th December to 24th December, 2009 under National Service Scheme. In this regard a large slum was adopted in Ward No 1, 96-99 Kossipour Road under Calcutta Corporation.

Objectives:
a) To involve them in slum reconstruction activities
b) To give the learning opportunity of the NSS volunteer to work in the community life
c) To provide slum dweller with medical facilities, arranged by the NSS volunteer and other doctors involved in the medical unit of the NSS
d) To organize the programme at the slum to exchange cultural activities between the slum dwellers and NSS volunteer of the University
e) To give the labour to the “slum community” in their slum reconstruction work such as cleaning of the area, cleaning of the drainage etc.
