Profile

A torch bearer of Lucknow School of Tabla playing Biswajit Bhattacharjee chose to sincerely understand the academics with similar yearning matching his natural creative urge through traditional tabla playing.
Professor Bhattacharjee talks about himself:
I started learning tabla at the age of 6/7 years with my Nana Guru The Tabla Wizard and the pioneer of Lucknow Tabla Gharana Ustad Wazid Hussain Khalifa. After then with kind his permission I continued leaning under the able guidence of my Father & Guru Pandit Anil Bhattacharjee. I also had the opportunity to recieve training from Ustad Affaq Hussain Khansahib, the son of Ustad Wazid Hussain Khansahib. The U.G.C. and W.B. State Academy of Music recognized me as a worthy representative of Lucknow Tabla Gharana.
I had the opportunity to receive ‘talim’ on six important tabla gharanas. I put my humble efforts to develop my style of playing with kathak dance of both Lucknow Gharana & Jaipur Gharana.
I also received special training in South Indian Mridangam. I feel equally comfortable with this instrument as I am in tabla, pakhawaj or shreekhol.
I got my BA and MA degrees from the Rabindra Bharati University. I was declared top on the Merit List [First Class First] and awarded a Gold Medal both in B.A.(Hons.) and in M.A. I also stood first class first and awarded a Gold Medal in M.Mus.(Sangit Prabar) by the Bangiya Sangit Parishad Kolkata.
I visit different universities for lectures and workshops. During first week of August 2011 I was at the Paro College of Education, Bhutan. I widely interacted with the students and faculty members of the college.
