Sanjoy Bandopadhyay, one of the foremost sitar players of the current generation, is the Chair Professor [Ustad Allauddin Khan Chair] of the Department of Instrumental Music of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata [India]. He is also Director, S.M. Tagore Center for Documentation & Research in Languishing & Obsolescent Musical Instruments [SMTC-DRLOMI]. The University Grants Commission nominated him as the Expert member of the ‘Advisory Committee’ of the Special Assistance Program [DRS] of the Department of Music, Delhi University. He served as Expert Member in different academic bodies of Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, Visva Bharati and others. He served the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata [IIM-C] as a Visiting Faculty.
Prof. Bandopadhyay did a small research project in collaboration with the Department of Physics and Meteorology, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur [W.B.] towards an effort for the standardization of Indian Classical Musical Instruments. He is involved in Chicago-Berlin-Kolkata the three city music project supported by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, Germany. He is also collaborating with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in a 3-D documentation project of the musical instruments of Raja S.M. Tagore.
He participated in important global events like his 2003 participation at the Plenary Session of UNESCO Conference held in Finland. He has received invitation from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada to visit their campus as Distinguished India-focus Visitor. He quite often takes part in major International Conferences on Music and Academics like his recent presentation [September, 2004] at the XIIIth International Conference of the German Musicological Society held at Weimar, Germany. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invited him as George A. Miller Visiting Professor [October, 2005]. He was invited as ‘Artist in Residence’ by the University of Chicago  and earlier by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs . He visited Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Mauritius to provide assistance from India on ‘Capacity Building’. He also visited some universities in South Africa like the University of South Africa, University of Pretoria, University of Cape Town and Rhodes University.
Prof. Bandopadhyay is a traditionally trained musician. He is accredited as a Top-Grade musician by the All India Radio. After his initial training from his father Pandit Peeyush Prasanna Bandopadhyay he had training under the guidance of the doyens of music like Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra, and Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee. He also had additional training from Pandit Manas Chakravarty, Pandit Ajay Sinha Roy and Dr. M.R. Gautam.
He has performed in many major music festivals in India and in the European countries and in the USA. His sitar recitals featured several times in the National Program of All India Radio[India’s National Radio Channel] and Doordarshan [India’s National Television Channel], and is accredited as ‘Top Grade’ by the All India Radio. Well known music companies like RPG-HMV, India; India Archive Music, Inc., New York [USA] and other companies recorded him for CDs.
His musical expressions sometimes attributed as post-modern, gives unique musical experience as a result of the synthesis of his extensive training in Senia-Shahjehanpur, Imdadkhani, and Rampur-Senia gharana-s.
