Performing Arts Therapy Centre

 

Performing Arts Therapy Centre, Rabindra Bharati University has started its journey in the year 2007. The Centre is working on systematic application of music, dance and drama to facilitate and promote learning, and mobilization, expression and coordination (physical, cognitive, emotional, social and mental) in order to develop human potential and to restore functions of an individual so that he or she can achieve better intra and inter personal integration and consequently can have a better quality of life.

Studies indicate that Performing Arts (music, dance, drama, art and play) have profound therapeutic effects on the living system. This course aims at imparting education on learning therapeutic effects of Performing Arts on the mind body relationship through related theories and practical exercises. We also use the science of Psychology and Physiology as tools for the systematic application of therapy.

The Centre was founded by Prof. Amita Dutta, the illustrious danseuse and Uday Shankar Professor of Dance who was the Founder Director of this Centre. Now it is headed by Prof. Debashish Mondal (Dean of Fine Arts).

Marks Distribution for each Paper:
Internal Assesment: 20
Written Examination: 80

Qualifying Marks: Compulsory 40% marks in each paper

Attendance: 75% attendance is compulsory for appearance in examination.

Re-appearance in Examination: If a candidate is caught cheating / fails / is absent for any paper, the candidate needs to re-appear for that particular paper in the next semester.

Total number of classes: 60 (12 - 16 classes each paper excluding seminars and practical work + 1 month of examination)

Objectives of PG Diploma in performing Arts Therapy / Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts Therapy

1) It teaches the therapeutic applications of Music, Art, Dance, and Drama in the field of Mental health and Stress Management.
2) It helps create an alternative form of emotional and creative expression in order to enhance communication skills and problem solving.
3) It helps to make professional Performing Arts Therapists


Projects (Field Work) Undertaken

The students of performing arts therapy have undertaken different field projects and on-hand training in different aspects of performing arts therapy under the guidance of experts in the specified fields. This practical training was undertaken as a partial fulfillment of their course work and project reports were also submitted by them for evaluation and assessment of the practical sessions. In all the cases active and/or passive therapy sessions were used as per the need of the client. Before the practical session, an assessment (physical and psychological) of the client was done with consultation with the supervisors, and after the short-term completion of the projects a re-evaluation was also done. Important hospitals, rehabilitation centers and institutions are actively involved in the research projects of the Center.

Therapists often have satisfaction in their career, as they may successfully help people improve their lives and overcome challenges. It helps to see the transformational change due to professional assistance. Different industries and companies employ therapists such as hospitals, corporate offices, schools, correctional facilities, mental health organizations, drug rehabilitation centers and nursing home. Therapists can also choose a specialization like child counselling, trauma counseling, stress, depression and trauma management and they can start their own private practice. Multiple employment opportunities are available.
